Chapter 43 – Damien

By the time they were ready for bed, Damien was pretty tired himself, not least because of an impromptu visit by Aaron and Jessie, that had turned into another welcome home celebration that ran way past midnight.

Aaron’s argument for a second celebration was that he hadn’t been there on the night that they’d arrived, which led Damien to wonder if they were going to have a third celebration when Jake and Gina got back from Florida.

On the plus side, they’d had a lot of fun with his brothers and sisters-in-law, and Holly had enjoyed the evening very much, but on the negative side, they were now both a bit weary to be starting a conversation about all the various ways he was happy to see her.

He lay in bed, setting the alarm on his phone as Holly finished up in the bathroom.

“Did you want to take a shower before bed?” Holly stood in the bathroom doorway, her hair wrapped in a towel.

“Nah, I’ll wait until morning.” Damien shook his head. “I had one when I got back from working out at Aaron’s place, so I’m fine for now.”

Holly clicked the main light off and sat on the bed, still patting her hair dry with the towel.

“I need to get more practise at smiling.” She rubbed the sides of her face where her jawbone hinged. “I literally ache where I’ve been laughing so much.”

“I blame Aaron.” Damien smiled. “He’s such a goofball when it comes to pleasing people. He just wants to make people happy all the time, and he’s such a good storyteller. There was a point earlier when I actually thought I was gonna break a rib because I was laughing so hard.”

“I love how he is with Jessie and Harry.” Holly smiled wistfully. “It’s like his whole world revolves around them, and he’s so happy about it. He’s totally devoted to them, and so unapologetic about it. They come first. End of story.”

“After spending years working in one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet, it’s like he considers every day is a blessing.” Damien nodded. “Few people can spend that many years in bomb disposal without being affected by it, but Jessie seems to have helped Aaron shake off whatever nightmares or PTSD he carried over from his previous life. She’s been really good for him, and he appreciates everything she does to give him the calm, balanced life he needs.”

“He was a bomb disposal officer?” Holly gasped.

“I’m not sure if that was his official title, but that’s what he did.” Damien shrugged. “IEDs, roadside devices, boobytraps… pretty much anything that could go boom and rip a body apart, were all in a day’s work for Aaron.”

“I see.” Holly was quiet for a moment. “And you? What was your job?”

“Special forces for the last many years.” Damien shrugged. “A few special missions recently, rescuing hostages kidnapped from their villages in Africa. Never a dull day.”

“You make it sound so easy.” Holly frowned.

“Easy it was not.
